S.O.A.R
Friday Fen and I woke up at 4:20am and headed off to the airport. We arrived at LAX by 9:00am and made our way to the rental cars. The gal at the counter mentioned they were having a special on convertibles and I saw Fen's face light up. We were only in town for 24 hours together and I figured what the heck. How often does he get to hang out with mom in LA and what better way to get around then with the top down! So we loaded ourselves into the cherry red VW Beetle. First stop, Universal Studios. I knew this would be a giant C.F. but it didn't seem right not going. We spent nearly 3/4 of our time waiting in lines but did make it through the new Simpson's ride which was worth it. We grabbed In-N-Out and headed to our hotel in Brentwood. Yep, that's right, we lived it up like Hollywood Stars! Actually I discovered Tablet Hotels now does last minute deals and we got a screaming price for one night and couldn't pass it up. We ran a couple of errands and then headed to the pool. We had neighborhood Italian and both of us passed out cold.
The next day Fen slept in while I jogged around the neighborhood. It was my attempt at a celebrity-style morning. I made sure I wore my super glam sunglasses and stopped by both Peet's and Whole Foods. Unfortunately, no sightings (at least no one I recognized).
After breakfast we packed up and headed back to the airport where Fen met with his fellow campers and counselors. He is going to spend the next 10 days in SoCal at S.O.A.R. It is a camp designed for kids with learning differences and specifically those with ADHD. He is super excited and was really looking forward to having lots of fun and making new friends. For us it seemed like an awesome opportunity for him to not only have a ton of fun but also pick up some new social skills he can take with him to Middle School.
The course begins in the Ventura area. The campers get to choose from activities over the next two days of surfing, boogie boarding, swimming, and rock climbing. Then it’s off to the majestic Channel Islands. The team has two days to explore the environment by boat, sea kayak, snorkeling, hiking, and fishing. He will explore sea caves and kelp forests, and may even encounter the elusive island fox! The course then moves north to the majesty of Moro Bay and Montana de Oro State Park. There will be swimming, snorkeling, horseback riding, deep sea fishing, hiking, plus viewing seals and sea lions in their native habitat. The course concludes with a final night and sumptuous feast in the Cambria area before the group returns to Los Angeles.
We are looking forward to hearing how it goes. He lucked out and his camp only has three campers and four counselors so really there will be tons of one on one attention which is awesome. I am sure he will have a great time!
